A Prayer for a Happy New Year
As we start this New Year may we walk gently.
May we be kind and gentle with ourselves each day.
May we have courage and hope during the difficult days
May we hold the light for others when we sense their darkness and difficulty
May we take lots of small steps rather than those random big leaps
May we trust our God, the creator of all life knowing we have a beautiful purpose in life.
May we try to do our best each day knowing this is all we can do.
May we treasure the gift that is today knowing that the real treasure is the beauty and simplicity that you bring to this day.
May we do our best to make the most of this coming year
Reflection on Sunday Readings
‘You are my Child, the Beloved; my favour rests on you’.
Today’s feast of the Baptism of Our Lord can be seen as a second manifestation of Christ, as the heavens are opened before the whole world. Through Christ’s baptism, in which the entire Trinity is present (Gospel), the world is made into a second creation.
In the First Reading, from Isaiah, we hear how God’s word will bear fruit in us. The one we see being baptised in the Gospel is the Word and, by carrying out the Father’s will perfectly, all creation is restored.
St John develops this theme (Second Reading) when he says that because Jesus overcame the world by water and blood, so we, with the Spirit living in us, can be saved.
Let us strive to deepen our trust in the Father, who is our salvation; to nurture our faith in the Spirit, who works in us to ensure we do not return empty-handed; and to strengthen our joy in the Son, through whose incarnation and baptism we are made into God’s children.
Following on from our words of appreciation in last week’s newsletter, we continue to pay tribute to those who enhance our liturgies and those who ensure the smooth running of our Church – Sacristans; Parish choir, led by Anne and Jim, organist; Frank, our cantor; Ministers of the Eucharistic and Word; Adoration group; Divine Mercy ministry; Baptism, Funeral and Sacramental Preparation teams; Parish Pastoral Council; Finance Committee; Weekly cleaning group; hospitality group. Our florist Eva and our gardener Louis.

Lift the Veil Paddy O;Keeffe
We’re poor souls just passing through
To something great and something new
Through the world’s storms we sail
And yearn to see behind the veil
Lift the veil just for a glimpse
Of Eternity to get some sense
We grope and stumble through our pain
Uncharted waters and rough terrain
We diverge on paths that’s not the way
And darkened valleys in mists of grey
Oh lift the veil just for a peek!
To lift a soul so weary and weak.
New Pilgrim Path
The late John O’Donohue an Irish poet, philosopher, and author of many books including Anam Ċara, believed that beauty is a human calling and that it unfolds in the becoming of a person, increasing in us as we pass through life’s most harrowing thresholds. He had a lifelong fascination with the inner landscape of our lives and with what he called “the invisible world” that is constantly intertwining what we can know and see. One of the lines that he loved in the New Testament was: “One day you will know as you are now known.” Listen to him at www.newpilgrimpath.ie

It’s Hard; Just Breathe Donna Ashworth
For many, January is a hard, cold month.
January is the darkest and most depressing month of the year and for many sensitive souls, the barrage of ‘advice’ on how we ‘should’ be living, is just too much.
So perhaps this is a safe place to say that maybe it’s okay to take a week or two to recover and to just be kind to ourselves before demanding better.
And for those who really do fall low in the darkest month of the year. For those who have given too much and to whom the future looks bleak – perhaps this is the right place to say – you are absolutely fine the way you are. Just stay.
Take some time to breathe.
Take some time to not think about anything much at all except breathing in and breathing out.
Take some time to build back up, not tear your yourself down.
For many, this month is a mountain that looks unclimbable.
Be kind, my friends. Always.
To Make a Relationship Last
To make a relationship last, you have to flow with a person as they change. Give them space. My friend always told me about his grandfather who was with his wife for 60 years before she passed.
His grandfather said that through all that time, his wife changed so much it felt like he had been with 8 different people by the end.
But he said the secret to making it last was that through all those changes, he never suffocated his wife with his own idea of who he expected her to be. Rather he loved, fully, every new woman she became.
Remember When You’d Pick Up a Stick
Remember as a child when you’d walk amongst the trees
And you’d find a stick that held so many possibilities?
It could’ve been an arrow, it could’ve been a sword
It could’ve been a telescope, a microphone, an oar
It could’ve been a hook you used to catch things from afar
And it could’ve been a catapult that launched a shooting star
It could’ve been a flute that played a song you knew so well
And it could’ve been a wand ready to cast a thousand spells
Well, now what if I told you that the stick was all of these?
Because there lies a certain sense of magic in the trees
A magic that reminds us we are not too old to play
That helps us see the awe and wonder wrapped in every day
See, the forest is our playground and the paths between the trees
Are endless new beginnings of adventures to be seized
So, grab that stick and row to shore then search the midnight sky
Play your favourite song then cast a spell that makes you fly
Catch a shooting star then launch it back beyond the clouds
Search for hidden gold and mark an X upon the ground
Remember how it feels to live like you’ve nothing to lose
When just a simple stick can be whatever you might choose
Then seize those new beginnings strewn across the forest floor
‘Cause adventure’s out there waiting so, what are you waiting for? – Becky Hemsley
Thought For The Week
Soar On Wings, like Eagles
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not be faint.
Isaiah 40:31.
