Preparation for Marriage
The first step is to make an appointment to see one of the priests of the parish of the bride. It is advisable to make arrangements about the date and time well in advance and so avoid disappointment.
No Weddings on the following days:
Weddings are not arranged for Sundays, Holy Days of Obligation nor during the Easter Triduum (Good Friday to Easter Sunday). A minimum of three months notice of the intended wedding is required for over 18’s and six months for those under 18 years of age.
Civil Law Requirements
The Family Law Act 1995 requires couples to give a minimum three months notice to the State of their intention to marry. Once you have booked the church, it is no harm to send this notification even one or two years in advance of your wedding. Without the notification to the State, the marriage will not be valid in Civil law. A form can be obtained from your the local registrar. Pre-Marriage Course:
Couples wishing to get married are advised to attend a Pre-Marriage Course. Couples will be enriched by these courses, which are practical and run by married couples. Contact ACCORD: on 01-4784400 or Milltown College on 01-2688411.
Documents needed for your Wedding:
1. Baptism & Confirmation Certificates:
Within six months of your wedding, each of you will need a new Baptismal Certificates issued by the church where you were baptised. You will also need a Certificate of Confirmation for the church where you were confirmed.
2. Letter of Freedom:
If you live more than six months in any other parish since you were sixteen years of age, you will need a Letter of Freedom.
3. Pre-Nuptial Enquiry Form:
The Priest from your church will fill this out for you.
It is very important that all these documents are ready at least one month before your Wedding Day.
A Priest relative or friend is very welcome to celebrate your wedding Mass in our church.
