Reflection on Sunday Readings
“The Good News of the Covenant”
Our Lenten journey began on Ash Wednesday and now leads us immediately into Jesus’s own journey into the desert in prayer, fasting, and to face temptation.
The First Reading reminds us of the journey of God’s chosen people when He establishes his Covenant with Noah, his descendants, and with the whole of creation. Never again will God destroy the earth with a flood. He leaves a bow in the sky to confirm this.
St Peter (Second Reading tells us that we are saved through the baptism that Christ won for us by his death and resurrection.
The Gospel gives a short account of Jesus being tempted in the desert. He emerges ready to proclaim his message: ‘The kingdom of God is close at hand’.
The Psalm reflects the message of hope that is contained in all the readings.
May we take heart from the scriptures as we begin our Lenten journey, ready to follow the Lord’s ways, and eager to learn his paths.

Trócaire 2024
This year we follow the story of Malita’s family living in an unpredictable climate in Malawi, Africa. Too much water and Malita’s livelihood will be destroyed, and too little water means her children will miss school.
Trócaire boxes are on the back table in our Church – please take one and return during Holy Week.

Prayer Changes Us; We Change Things
I used to pray that God would feed the hungry, or do this or do that, but now I pray that He will guide me to whatever it is I’m supposed to do to, whatever I can do. I used to pray for answers but now I pray for strength’ I used to believe that prayer changes things, but now I know that prayer changes us, and we change things. – Mother Teresa.
The Dress
”Do you like my dress,” the little girl asked of a woman passing by. “My mom made it just for me,” she said with a tear in her eye.
“Well, I think it’s very pretty. So, why are you crying?”
With a quiver in her voice, the little girl answered: “After she made this dress, she had to go away.”
“Well now, with a little girl like you waiting for her, I’m sure she’ll be right back.”
“No, no, you don’t understand,” said the little girl through her tears. “My daddy said she is up in heaven now with Grandad.”
Finally, the woman realised what she meant and why she was crying. She knelt down gently beside the little girl, cradled her in her arms and together they cried for the mommy that was gone.
Then suddenly the little girl did something the woman thought was a bit strange.
She stopped crying, stood back from the woman and began to sing. She sang so softly it was almost a whisper. It was the sweetest sound the woman ever heard, almost like the song of a very small bird.
When she stopped, she explained to the woman. “My mommy used to sing that song to me before she went away, and she made me promise to sing it whenever I started crying and it would make me stop.”
The woman smiled as the girl spread her arms wide. “See,” she said, “it did and now my eyes are dry.”
As the woman turned to go, the little girl grabbed her sleeve. “Lady, can you wait just a minute. I want to show you something.”
“Of course,” she answered.
Pointing to a spot on her dress, the little girl said: “Right here is where my mommy kissed my dress. And here,” pointing to another spot. “And here is another kiss. And here, and here. Mommy said she put all those kisses on my dress so that I would have her kisses for everything that made me cry.”
Then the lady realised she wasn’t just looking at a dress. She was looking at a mother who knew that she was going away and would not be there to kiss away the hurts she knew her daughter would suffer. So, she took all the love she had for her beautiful little girl and put it into the dress her child so proudly wore.
She no longer saw a little girl in a simple dress. She saw a child wrapped in her mother’s love.
