Reflection on Sunday Readings
‘Lord, I believe!’
Before we enter the darker days of Holy Week, we celebrate Laetare (‘Rejoice!’) Sunday. Today we are reminded of the joy of the presence of Jesus, the light of our world, and of the love of God shining through our lives.
Both the First Reading and the Psalm speak of the shepherd caring for the flock. Despite David’s youth and outward appearance, the Lord sees the strength of his heart, which will enable him to lead God’s people.
The Psalm speaks of the certainty that I can rely on the Lord as my shepherd, keeping me safe from harm whatever happens in my life.
In the Second Reading, St Paul reminds the Ephesians (and us) that God’s light in us shines out for others when we live in goodness and right living and truth.
In the Gospel, the blind man’s sight is restored, and he comes into the light. Not only is he physically able to see for the first time, but he also recognises Jesus as the Son of Man. In contrast, those around him remain in the darkness of unbelief, trapped by their unwillingness to see Jesus as he really is.
This week, we pray for those who have yet to allow the light of Christ into their lives. We pray that we will carry Christ’s light to others as we walk beside them, sharing their hardships and sorrows.
Laetare Sunday, occurring in the middle of Lent, serves as a “shot in the arm” or a joyful pause. It is a day of rejoicing that breaks the intense sombreness of the Lenten season, reminding the faithful that Easter is near.

Trócaire -Lent 2026
As a single mother, with the weight of three generations of her family on her shoulders, Uwamahoro remains strong despite “the many
things that come, there is nothing else you can do.”
For someone who has had a very difficult life, and continues to face very significant daily challenges, she is quite positive and says that what she requires.

Sutton Parish invites all to the next Parish Rosary, Saturday, 28th March, in honour of the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord.

Raheny Rotary Churchgate Collection.
Raheny Rotary will hold a churchgate collection in our parish on weekend 28th/29th March. We support initiatives around peace, and a peace pole was ‘planted’ in the Church grounds last October.
This collection is focused on supporting ‘Shelter Box’ who provide emergency shelter and tools that are of practical assistance for families who have lost their homes through earthquakes, floods, hurricanes
and conflicts. Kits include a Family tent, blankets etc. Your support for this collection is much appreciated

No Snakes
One of the most well-known legends of Saint Patrick is that he banished all the snakes from Ireland. The story claims that Saint Patrick climbed a hill, raised his staff, and ordered the snakes to slither away into the sea and never return. Scientists and historians now all agree that Ireland never had native snakes, due to its cold climate and geographical isolation.
There was likely no physical meaning behind this tale, and it may have been a metaphor for Patrick bringing the Irish from paganism to Christianity.
