Novena to the Holy Spirit 12th – 20th May 2024
Pilgrim God, we give you thanks and praise.
You constantly journey with us even
in our darkness and doubts.
We seek your way of loving kindness
to walk together as one family.
Open our eyes to recognise you in
the faces of one another,
in the breaking of bread and in the
splendour of creation.
May the risen Christ sow seeds of hope
and new life deep within us.
May our hearts and minds be filled with your Word, bringing forth truth, justice and peace.
May the Holy Spirit working in and through us
do much more than we can dare to imagine
as we live out our baptismal calling
in humble and loving service.
We make this our prayer through Christ Our Lord. Amen

Reflection on Sunday Readings
The Spirit is our Life
The ancient Pentecost commemoration of the revelation of God (through the giving of the Torah and the making of the covenant) was celebrated by the early Christians as the revelation of God through the outpouring of the Spirit (First Reading).
The Gospel, returns us to Jesus’s words of farewell to his disciples. The ‘Spirit of truth’ is promised to us as it was to them. So today, we can say, this is our season in the Spirit.
The Second Reading shows St Paul’s condemnation of self-indulgence amongst those belonging to the Church at Galatia. He tells them that only the consolations of the Spirit – ‘love, joy, peace … gentleness and self-control’ – can unite their hearts to the freedom of the Gospel.
We can ask for the help of this same Spirit in the words of the Psalmist: ‘Lord, send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth’.
As we are called to witness to the fire of God (by bringing the light of the Son and the heat of the Spirit to all we meet), let’s pray this line of St Paul every day this coming week.
‘Since the Spirit is my life, let me be directed by the Spirit.’

Four Seasons Collection
Last week’s 2nd collection of the year for our Church Projects fund totalled a hugely successful €2322. We are now a lot closer to our target of €27,000 to undertake our first project to resurface the parish car park. Our total now stands at €17,766.22. Don’t worry if you have missed the collection, donation envelopes are available on the back table of our Church and can be dropped into the Parish Office. Once again thank you to everyone who supported this collection.
We extend a big welcome to the First Communion children and their families to the 12 noon Mass this Sunday – a very special day in their lives.
Reflection on the Scriptures

St. Fintan’s Cemetery Mass
will take place on Sunday, 9th June at 12.00 noon.
NB NO 12.30pm Mass in St Fintan’s Church on that day.
‘BUMPER BOOK AND BUN FEST!’
Urgent help to fund vital maintenance work – some completed and some on-going. The completed work could not have happened without your generous donations. In an effort to ‘do our bit’ to help, we will have a “Bumper Book and Bun Fest”, 4pm-7.30pm Saturday 25th; 10am-3pm Sunday 26th May in the Parish Centre. All invited to come to browse the books, donate and enjoy a delicious cream tea. All proceeds donated will go towards the car park resurfacing.
New Pilgrim Path
“It is a shame that the Holy Spirit tends to be an afterthought”. Richard Rohr, Franciscan friar, and founder of the ecumenical Centre for Action and Contemplation believes that, of the two baptisms mentioned by Christ – baptism with water, and baptism with fire and the Holy Spirit – many of us have not truly experienced the latter. The gift of the Spirit is within us, but we need to fan into flame this gift we already have. If we are to draw on that dynamic presence, we must believe in it and want it. Anam Cara, Soul Love
In the Celtic tradition, there is a beautiful understanding of love and friendship. One of the fascinating ideas here is the idea of soul-love; the old Gaelic term for this is anam cara. Anam is the Gaelic word for soul and cara is the word for friend. So anam cara in the Celtic world was the “soul friend.”
In everyone’s life, there is a great need for an anam cara, a soul friend. In this love, you are understood as you are without mask or pretension. The superficial and functional lies and half-truths of social acquaintance fall away, you can be as you really are. Love allows understanding to dawn, and understanding is precious. Where you are understood, you are at home.
The anam cara experience opens a friendship that is not wounded or limited by separation or distance. Such friendship can remain alive even when the friends live far away from each other. Because they have broken through the barriers of persona and egoism to the soul level, the unity of their souls is not easily severed. When the soul is awakened, physical space is transfigured. Even across the distance, two friends can stay attuned to each other and continue to sense the flow of each other’s lives. With your anam cara you awaken the eternal. ~John O’Donohue
