Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.  Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.  I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Reflection on Sunday’s Gospel

Think of the love that the Father has lavished upon us!

On this feast day we are reminded the Saints who have gone before us and also of the many inspirational people living saintly lives here on earth their example of love and service inspire us on our own journey.

In the Second Reading, St John’s letter speaks of the love lavished upon us by God the Father. Jesus’s teaching in the Gospel outlines the wealth of blessings that come from living our lives well and serving others. We are reminded that although being true to his example may lead to persecution and rejection, we will be rewarded in heaven. This week, we ask the Lord’s help to be generous with prayers, time, and possessions in responding to the plight of those in our world who experience the harsh realities of persecution, loss and injustice on a daily basis.

New Pilgrim Path

“In November, we remember…” November is traditionally the month of remembrance for the dead, in many countries and in many churches. Our website of the week is a short, guided audio reflection on “Grief” presented by the superb ‘Pray as You Go’ website, drawing on the lines of John O’Donohue’s haunting poem, “For Grief”.  See below and audio version at www.newpilgrimpath.ie

“For Grief”                     By John O’Donohue

When you lose someone you love,
Your life becomes strange,
The ground beneath you gets fragile,
Your thoughts make your eyes unsure;
And some dead echo drags your voice down
Where words have no confidence.
Your heart has grown heavy with loss;
And though this loss has wounded others too,
No one knows what has been taken from you
When the silence of absence deepens.

Flickers of guilt kindle regret
For all that was left unsaid or undone.

There are days when you wake up happy;
Again inside the fullness of life,
Until the moment breaks
And you are thrown back
Onto the black tide of loss.  Days when you have your heart back,
You are able to function well
Until in the middle of work or encounter,
Suddenly with no warning,
You are ambushed by grief.

It becomes hard to trust yourself.
All you can depend on now is that
Sorrow will remain faithful to itself.
More than you, it knows its way
And will find the right time
To pull and pull the rope of grief
Until that coiled hill of tears
Has reduced to its last drop.

Gradually, you will learn acquaintance
With the invisible form of your departed;
And, when the work of grief is done,
The wound of loss will heal
And you will have learned
To wean your eyes
From that gap in the air
And be able to enter the hearth
In your soul where your loved one
Has awaited your return
All the time.

All Souls

A neighbour whistling as he passed,

A mother’s gentle word of advice,

A father strong and cautiously wise.

The spirit of forebears hovered

round family conversations,

The sense of what is real,

The doubts of day and night

were part of them and us.

Each day they faced

the elements and the marketplace.

They lived in a world

Repopulated from the graves,

the past and present intertwined.

Family, Friends and Faith;

They had faith and they had faithfulness,

Sleeping now the sleep of the just,

leaving a legacy to emulate

on paths as yet untrodden

Socrates and the Three Sieves

In Ancient Greece, Socrates had a great reputation of wisdom. One day, someone came to find the great philosopher and said to him:

– Do you know what I just heard about your friend?

– A moment, replied Socrates. Before you tell me, I would like to test you the three sieves.

– The three sieves?

– Yes, continued Socrates. Before telling anything about the others, it’s good to take the time to filter what you mean. I call it the test of the three sieves. The first sieve is the TRUTH. Have you checked if what you’re going to tell me is true?

– No, I just heard it.

– Very good! So, you don’t know if it’s true. We continue with the second sieve, that of KINDNESS. What you want to tell me about my friend, is it good?

– Oh, no! On the contrary.

– So, questioned Socrates, you want to tell me bad things about him and you’re not even sure they’re true? Maybe you can still pass the test of the third sieve, that of UTILITY. Is it useful that I know what you’re going to tell me about this friend?

– No, not really.

– So, concluded Socrates, what you were going to tell me is neither true, nor good, nor useful. Why, then, did you want to tell me this?

Thought for the Week

We are not loved because we are so beautiful and good. We are beautiful and good because we are loved. —Jürgen Moltmann, Theology of Joy)
