Reflection on Sunday Readings
‘Here is my servant whom I uphold’
With the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we reach the end of Christmastide, and the Gospel readings begin to follow Jesus in his teaching and public mission. This feast is another ‘epiphany’: a manifestation of God as Father, Son and Spirit.
The First Reading from Isaiah is joyous. God will save his people. Like a shepherd he will care for them and bring them home from exile.
The Psalm is a prayer of praise to the God of creation, who nourishes his people and pours forth his Spirit upon them.
In the Second Reading we are told that we have been saved through rebirth in water and the Spirit: not through any merit of our own, but thanks to the loving kindness of our God.
In the Gospel we hear God’s voice proclaiming Jesus as his beloved Son, and the Spirit descends upon him as he is baptised by John.
As Pilgrims of Hope in this Jubilee year, let us consider the glories of our universe, created through and for Christ, who brings all things to perfection. Perhaps pondering on the waters of baptism will lead us to a greater and deeper appreciation of this wonderful element and encourage us to help and pray for those deprived of life-giving water.

The story of the Epiphany is probably one of the best known scripture stories and in particular how they followed a very bright star. It is certain that they were the first astrologers and a leading group in exploring the wonders of our amazing universe that we now know is 13.6 billion years old.
The journey of the wise men was slow, reminding us how important it is to take our time with many things in life. Sometimes in life we need to slow down and less is often more. As they followed the star, they had a sense that our universe is so much bigger than our tiny world. For the wise men they knew there was something more to this life. It was not random and for them the real meaning of life was to be found with Jesus.

Janice, our parish secretary was on leave so the rest of us fell asleep! We neglected to pay tribute to a number of people, including Eva, who provided beautiful flower arrangements on the altar and surrounding area during the Christmas season. Also those volunteers, led by Gary and Ted, who prepared the Church by setting up the Christmas Tree and crib; Nuala, who has looked after the repository in our Church for many years in such a gentle, pleasant way. Many thanks to all.

So Along Comes January.
And, she’s walked in the room with an Air of mystery. An Air of hope.
For, she holds in her hands all our wishes and our dreams.
Ahh but, let us not put too much weight upon her cold Winter shoulders. For she holds no key, no answers for us.
You see, we hold our own destiny. Our reason to be. If only we would let it come to be.
So have your hopes, your wishes and your dreams. Just remember, it is you who carries your destiny.

You Will Be Okay
On this journey of life, you will grieve.
You will grieve people who are still alive, as well as those passed on.
You will grieve shattered dreams and you will grieve versions of yourself, and others, from whom you had to break free. But that’s okay.
In this life nothing lasts forever but with that same truth comes the knowledge that all pain will lose its bite too and great new things will miraculously emerge.
Wonderful new people who shine light into your soul will come on in, if you leave space.
And as long as you cry when you must, laugh when you can and love those you have every day that your little broken heart still beats, you will be okay. You will be okay.. Donna Ashworth
Are You the One the World Needs?
Have you ever considered that, at any given moment, you are exactly who the world needs?
That you’re the tune to someone’s lyrics when no other melody seems to fit. That you’re the stars to someone’s sky when it is drowning in inky darkness. That you’re the moon to someone’s ocean when it cannot find its way back to the sand. And it might not be forever.
