Lourdes Collection 2024

This weekend 24th/25th August, there will be an outdoor collection after all Masses to assist with the costs of bringing sick pilgrims as part of this pilgrimage to Lourdes in September. This year the overall collection in the Dublin Diocese is a very much reduced figure from last year. It is a very worthy cause, and your contributions will be very much appreciated, especially as we hope to partly-fund the inclusion of a frail parishioner for this year’s pilgrimage.  You may wish to sign the blue sheet on the back table which will be brought to Lourdes for prayers for your intentions.

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is held Tuesday to Friday, 11am-3pm, each week

Reflection on the Scriptures for this Sunday

The Lord is close to the broken-hearted; and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

This Sunday, the readings invite us to consider honestly the depth of our love for the Lord. The same challenging questions once put to the Israelites by Joshua, and later to the disciples by Jesus, are being asked of us today.

Today’s Gospel depicts a moment of crisis for Jesus’s followers. Some, who have already said yes to him, are now finding it difficult to accept what he is claiming.  Jesus wonders aloud how they will respond to what is to come.

In the First Reading the people of Israel, too, are offered a clear choice: do they want to serve God, or desert God?  They respond by declaring: ‘we have no intention of deserting the Lord our God.’

In the mystery of spousal choice, submission and loving service, the Second Reading offers us an allegory for the Church’s relationship to Christ.

The Psalm shows what this service looks, feels, and tastes like. It is in the form of the goodness of the Lord, who chooses to be close to us, especially in our distress.

This week let’s trust in the closeness of the Lord, who offers us freedom whilst freely choosing us; the Lord who is good, and who always works for our goodness.

Pastoral Letter – Building Hope with Open Hearts
Next week Archbishop Farrell will issue a Pastoral Letter entitled Building Hope with Open Hearts. It launches, across the diocese, a significant new phase of the Building Hope pastoral renewal initiative with the publication in September of the Building Hope Pastoral Strategic Planning Resource 2025–2027 and associated Workshops. It also references the World Day of Prayer for Creation 2024.  Copies of the Pastoral letter will be available on the back table of our Church.

The Irish Cancer Society

Is seeking compassionate volunteer drivers in our community to help to continue the vital service of transport for patients to cancer treatment appointments. If you have a few hours to spare, a valid driving license, and a safe, reliable vehicle, you can ease the journey during a challenging time, offering comfort and support when it is needed most. Details from Monica volunteer@irishcancer.ie.

Leaving Cert Students:

We send our best wishes and prayers to all the students who received their results on Friday and who are taking the next step towards their future.

We hope you receive your course of choice in the CAO – if not there are many other options available which can often work out for the best.

Back to School

We send our good wishes to all the children going back to school shortly and a special ‘nod’ to those starting school for the first time.

New Pilgrim Path – Centering Prater

“Centering Prayer is not done with attention but with intention” – it emphasizes interior silence and prayer as a personal relationship with God. Dr Cynthia Bourgeault has worked closely with Fr. Thomas Keating, the Trappist monk who founded the Centering Prayer method, for nearly 25 years. Access her 30-minute introduction to this simple (if not always easy) practice at www.newpilgrimpath.ie

Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself

You’re so hard on yourself.   But remember, everyone has a chapter they don’t read out loud. Take a moment.    Sit back.  Marvel at your life; at the mistakes that gave you wisdom, at the suffering that gave you strength.  Despite everything, you will continue to move forward and endure.   Remember, no matter how dark it gets, the sun will rise again.

Father, Ease My Anxiety

Dear Father in Heaven, so much in my life is broken. I have so many concerns and cares, and they weigh me down. While I desire to cast my cares upon You, I find I usually pick them back up again, and they only add more anxiety and stress. Please help me learn to cast my cares on You as I learn what it means to rest and trust in You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. (Chrystal Hurst)

Be Whatever You Are Now

Be confused, it’s where you begin to learn new things.

Be broken, it’s where you begin to heal.

Be frustrated, it’s where you start to make more authentic decisions.

Be sad, because if we are brave enough we can hear our heart’s wisdom through it.

Be whatever you are right now. No more hiding.

You are worthy, always.     S.C. Lourie

If I Had One More Day

If I could have just one more day with you . . .

I would hardly speak. I would simply listen to your voice and commit every tone of it to memory until it became my favourite melody.

I would look at you. I would study your eyes and your mouth, and I would learn every angle, every pane of your face until I could see you perfectly with my eyes closed.

I would hold your hand in mine. I would trace all the lines on your palm until they became a trail – a map – that I could retrace on my own palm every time I felt lost.

I would soak you up and breathe you in until there was not a single thing that I could not recall at a moment’s notice.

But more than anything, if I had one more day with you,  I would hold you .      I would hold you so tight, hoping that maybe if I didn’t let you go . . . You wouldn’t. That you wouldn’t have to leave again.    Becky Hemsley

Thought for the Week

“I don’t have to chase extraordinary moments to find happiness – it’s right in front of me if I’m paying attention and practising gratitude.” ~ Brené Brown
