Lent
Wednesday 2nd March is Ash Wednesday, a day of fast and abstinence. Ashes will be blessed during 10am Mass and will be available in the Church all day. Ash Wednesday gets its name from the traditional blessing of the ashes taken after the burning of Palm branches from the previous year’s Palm Sunday celebrations. The ashes are used to draw a cross on the head of people to mark the beginning of their Lent fast. The drawing of a cross is often done while repeating the words “Repent and believe in the Gospel” (Mark 1:15) or “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19).

Reflection on Today’s Gospel
The disciple will imitate their teacher
The First Reading encourages us to be discriminating in conversation with others, noticing the quality and content of another’s speech before choosing to imitate them. The Gospel invites us to have Jesus for our teacher and guide: ‘the fully trained disciple will always be like their teacher’. We are reminded to avoid the temptation to follow others blindly or to criticise them when our own faults are much more evident. Our lives will reflect our own purity of heart and likeness to Jesus.
Whilst this may seem a hard teaching and difficult to put into practice, St Paul tells us that we should never give up, never admit defeat. (Second Reading). And so we can recite the Psalm with joy, offering praise and thanks to the Lord, who sustains those who place their trust in God.
Prayer for the Ukraine
Holy and Gracious God, We pray for the people of the Ukraine and the people of Russia; for their countries and their leaders. We pray for all those who are afraid; that your everlasting arms hold them in this time of great fear.
We pray for all those who have the power over life and death; that they will choose for all people life, and life in all its fullness.
We pray for those who choose war; that they will remember that you direct your people to turn our swords into ploughshares and seek for peace.
We pray for leaders on the world stage; that they are inspired by the wisdom and courage of Christ.
Above all, Lord, today we pray for peace for Ukraine.
And we ask this in the name of your blessed Son.
Lord have mercy. Amen
Pope Francis : Pray for Peace in Ukraine
Pope Francis has called on people to pray and fast for peace in Ukraine on Ash Wednesday. The pope called on believers and nonbelievers to combat the “diabolical insistence, the diabolical senselessness of violence” with prayer and fasting. “I invite everyone to make Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting for peace,” he said. “I encourage believers in a special way to devote themselves intensely to prayer and fasting on that day. May the Queen of Peace protect the world from the folly of war.”

Some Changing Practices of Lent
Lent, which starts this coming Wednesday, is the six week period leading up to Easter. It’s one of the most important times of year for many Christians held at a similar level of importance to Advent. It is seen as a time of solemn observance and preparation for the celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus at Easter. Just as we carefully prepare for events in our personal lives, Lent invites us to make our minds and hearts ready for remembering Jesus’ life, death and body resurrection. Some people choose to give up one item for Lent, maybe y a ‘luxury’ such as chocolate, meat or alcohol. It is also becoming increasingly common for people to give up other things in order to refocus their faith during this time; such as watching TV, going to the gym, even social media. Many people also use Lent to study their Bibles and pray more intensively, making use of the many devotional books and courses now available. And more people are turning to the 40 acts challenge as a way of doing Lent differently; using simple daily reflections and acts of generosity as a way of putting others first during preparations for Easter.
