Reflection on Sunday’s Readings
The readings today reflect on the happiness which can be ours if we keep to the spirit of the law and not just its letter. St Paul tells the Corinthians that wisdom comes from God. We cannot fully understand God’s purpose for us, but need the help of the Spirit to really appreciate the depths of God (Second Reading). Finally, in the Gospel, we hear Jesus telling his disciples that he has come to complete the law, not to abolish it. He is the fulfilment of the law. Using a few everyday examples, he shows how we need to go beyond the letter of the commandments and truly understand what is behind them. We pray that all law makers, ecclesiastical or secular, will always work for the greater good of all and that the Spirit will be with all who have the power to bring greater peace in the world.

Saint Valentine’s Day
Saint Valentine, whose feast day will be on Tuesday (14th February) was a 3rd-century Roman saint who has wide-ranging spiritual responsibilities. People call on him to watch over the lives of lovers, of course, but also for interventions regarding beekeeping and epilepsy, as well as the plague, fainting and traveling. As you might expect, he’s also the patron saint of engaged couples and happy marriages. His remains have been in Dublin’s Whitefriar Street Church, since 1836 when then-famous preacher, Father John Spratt, travelled to Rome to speak at the Church of the Gesù where some of Rome’s most faithful had come to hear him preach. One such admirer was Pope Gregory XVI, who bestowed upon Fr Spratt the gift of St Valentine’s remains and a vial of his blood. This simple wooden box trimmed with a silk ribbon and wax seal travelled back to Ireland with him and is displayed in Whitefriar’s Street at this time.
They Have Us
I thought about the moon last night, how she has no light source of her own. How what we see in the midnight sky, is simply a majestic rock, reflecting the light of the sun back to us to ensure we are never without guidance, never without hope. Then I considered how, without the moon, our planet would tilt wildly, experiencing extreme weather and uninhabitable conditions, as each side of our earth faced too much light, or too little. And I guess what I am trying to say is, this galaxy, our planet, is a magical, wondrous thing. And we are all held in place by it. We are not alone, and we are never without support. Don’t fear the long nights my friend, look to the skies for reassurance, that light always comes back. The sun and the moon, they have us. And they work together, diligently, to ensure we go on. So go on. Donna Ashworth
Prayer for Stress
Dear God, Things haven’t been easy for me lately, and I feel so overwhelmed, frustrated and stressed out. The difficulties I’m facing weigh on my mind, my head and my shoulders and because of that, I can’t seem to get anything right or even sleep at night and that even makes me weary and stressed out even more.
God, you said we should come to you with our heavy burdens and you will give us rest. So, God I come to you, take my burdens and my frustrations, and grant me peace. Take away this stress that I feel and restore my soul. Everything around me is crumbling, God, but I have hope in you. Help me to relax and surrender it all to you.
Give me strength and clarity of mind and teach me to take each day at a time.
Thank you, Lord, for your everlasting love.
Thought for the Week
Today you could be talking to someone who is trying their best not to fall apart. So whatever you do, do it with kindness in your heart.
