New Pilgrim Path – Ephphatha! – ‘Be Opened’!
The liturgy at this time of year includes the occasion where Jesus heals the deaf and dumb man, using the Aramaic word, ephphatha – ‘be opened!’ When Jesus’ original Aramaic words are used in the Gospels, it was to emphasise the power of Christ’s original utterance and underscore the intimacy of the moment and the personal relationship of Jesus with the one with whom He is communicating. When we are spiritually and emotionally paralysed, unable to receive God’s love and cut off from the spiritual energies within our souls, we need to allow Christ to whisper into our depths – ephphatha! Reflection on Sunday’s Readings
‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all peoples’.
Each of our readings this Sunday approaches this truth that God’s mercy and salvation are for everyone. from a different perspective.
The prophet Isaiah (First Reading) exhorts us to act with justice and integrity. He foresees a time when anyone who loves and follows the way of the Lord will be part of the salvation covenant.
The Psalm is a song of praise ringing with this truth, telling of a time when all nations will share in the loving light of God.
Paul, writing to the early Gentile church in Rome, describes his conviction that their personal conversion and belief in God will help to fulfil God’s promise to bring salvation to everyone, and not just to the chosen people. (Second Reading)
Today’s Gospel presents an uncharacteristically abrupt Jesus initially rejecting the pleas of a desperate
Canaanite woman. And yet it is this woman’s determined faith and sense of humour that challenges Jesus to step beyond the boundaries of his initial mission, thus revealing the truth that his salvation and healing is for all people – no exceptions.
Let us pray that we will be able to recognise and have the courage to respond to faith expressed in surprising places. We ask that we will each play our part in revealing God’s love to the world.

A new Diocesan Youth Leadership Course will take place in September which will equip young adults to take on leadership roles in their parish; peer-to-peer ministry, and training those looking to accompany young adults in their parish. Come to Pathways: Exploring Faith and Ministry
If you want to know and live your faith better – this is the course for you. The programme, run by the Dublin Archdiocese, a two-year, one evening a week course for adults, begins this year in DCU St Patrick’s Campus, Upper Drumcondra Road, on Thursday, 28th September,7pm–9.30pm – no exams or written work. Only requirement – openness to listening to others and to participate. The cost is €400 for the coming year which may be paid in instalments. You’re the Ghost
There’s a part of the grieving process,

putting one foot in front of the other,

but it’s really as though you’re the ghost.
Perhaps you are.
