Journey Through Lent – Invitation

There is no sound tree that produces rotten fruit
The readings for today remind us how words and actions illustrate what lies in the heart of each person.
The First Reading speaks of the true test of a person being what they say, and thus the importance of listening carefully to others and being conscious of our own choice of words. The Psalm celebrates the joy of offering thanks to God Lord for the goodness he brings to his followers. (Second Reading). St Paul encourages the early Christian community in Corinth to persevere in serving the Lord Paul reminds them – and us – that following the example of Jesus will never be in vain.
In the Gospel, Jesus uses striking visual images to illustrate his teaching. He warns us not to follow others blindly and speaks of the danger of judging others whilst not acknowledging our own failings.
So, as Pilgrims of Hope in this Jubilee Year, we pray that we may be aware of the impact our way of living has on the environment. We pray that we will make good choices to protect God’s creation.
Trócaire 2025
Guatemala has extremely high levels of poverty, with life a struggle for many. Climate change means flooding, and droughts are more extreme and unpredictable. People are losing their homes, their livelihoods, and their lives. We read of a family, and a small community, from La Paz. Ilma and Julio and their four children depend on farming for their livelihood. This year Trócaire’s focus is on Climate-resilient farming methods as a response to the effects of climate change. Some ideas for Lent – more next week!
- Pray for a particular person every day of Lent. Sometime in the Easter season, tell them.
- Only buy things you absolutely need to have.
- Pray the rosary daily for someone who has hurt you. Meditate on how much Jesus loves that person.

- Spiritual Thought for The Week
‘Lord God and maker of all things, creation is upheld by you. While all things must change and know decay, you are unchanging and always new.’ ~From The Breviary
This prayer recognises that God is at the centre of life – the heartbeat of creation. The line ‘You are unchanging and always new’ is worth reflecting on. If something doesn’t change, it suggests that it is stuck, stale and old, so how can it be new? ‘Unchanging’ here means that God’s love for us never changes.
Yes, there are times when we make mistakes, but these can be opportunities for growth. We think we have pushed ourselves outside of God’s love. But this cannot happen because God’s love for us is constant, unchanging and eternal. It is a rock-solid foundation on which to build our lives, a light to guide us, the air we breathe and the blood in our veins. It is always there and will never change. Every day, every hour and every minute are new beginnings. God is in there too, unchanging but always new.

We continue to remember Pope Francis with our prayers and good wishes. March is Just Full of Firsts
You might be the first person to watch the leaves unfurl on a tree. Those tiny, green buds are out there waiting to be discovered by you.
You will also be the first person to feel a specific spring wind kiss your face and the first to watch a fuzzy caterpillar make its way along a certain blade of grass. Those tiny shoots peeking out of the dirt in your garden will be spotted by you before anyone else sees them, and that particular raindrop never splashed anyone before it hit your face.
The water in that mud puddle is new and just waiting for you to jump in it. That new spring dress has never hung in anyone else’s closet before.
Oh, the wonders that March brings, the countless things waiting to be discovered. March is full of things no one has ever seen before.
I thought I couldn’t love March any more than I already did, but now I do. As I head outside, rain or shine, I will remember that God has placed magic in front of my eyes, and every day I will see things that no one has ever seen before. Ann Kirsten
