Lay Ministry Collection

Vocations Sunday
In 1964, Pope Paul VI, launched Vocations Sunday, which is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Easter also called Good Shepherd Sunday. As Catholics and people of God we all know that God is calling us and has a plan for each of us. He called each of us by name through our Baptism to holiness. He continues to call and cry out to us each day to be his disciples, some to married life, some to priesthood, some to religious life or to single life. All are called! What is God calling you to?
Let us pray for vocations today and take time to stir the hearts and minds of the people around us to think about the topic of Vocation. The National Office for Vocation (NOV) invites you to talk to and encourage children, young people, grandchildren, students, family members to respond generously to the calling of the Lord.

Reflection on Sunday Readings
They too will listen to my voice …’
We continue our journey through Eastertide, experiencing the joy of the Risen Lord. This fourth Sunday of Easter features Jesus as the Good Shepherd and is also the World Day of Prayer for Vocations.
In the First Reading, Peter explains that the miracle he has been able to perform came not from him, but from the name of Jesus Christ, the keystone rejected by the builders.
The Psalm, normally sung by pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem, is a thanksgiving prayer from someone who has been rescued from an ordeal. It uses the same cornerstone image as the First Reading. Like Peter, the psalmist acknowledges the Lord as his Saviour.
The writer of the Second Reading stresses that we are God’s children. We might find the path difficult, and feel unsure of what the future holds, but we will be transformed into God’s likeness when we meet him.
In the Gospel, Jesus describes himself as the Good Shepherd, who is prepared to lay down his life for us; he knows us intimately and wants to bring everyone into his fold.
On this Day of Prayer for Vocations, we pray that everyone should be willing and able to fulfil their own vocation. We continue to pray for war-torn countries, that they will find a Good Shepherd to guide them out of conflict.

Thank You
The collection for the students from St. Pauls Secondary School in Raheny for their Immersion Project to travel to Kamulu in Kenya in June) raised a very generous €1,863. The pupils were delighted with the kindness shown from our parish and wish to come back and let you know how they get on after their trip. A big ‘thank you’ to all who donated.

The Priest Karl Rahner SJ
The priest is not an angel sent from heaven.
He is a man chosen from among men, a member of the church, a Christian.
Remaining man and Chrisian, he begins to speak to you the Word of God.
This word is not his own. No, he comes to you because God has told him to proclaim His word.
Perhaps he has not entirely understood it himself.
Perhaps he adulterates it. But he believes, and despite his fears he knows he must communicate God’s word to you.
For must not someone of us say something about God, about eternal life, about the majesty of grace in our sanctified being; must not someone of us speak of sin, the judgement and mercy of God?
So, my dear friends, pray for him.
Carry him so that he might be able to sustain others by bringing to them the mystery of God’s love revealed in Christ Jesus.
