Reflection on Sunday Readings
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
Today’s readings invite us to follow a lifestyle focused on humility, righteousness, integrity and mercy, challenging the worldly ways of success and happiness. They encourage us to trust in God’s protection and the promise of reward in heaven. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches the Beatitudes, revealing his own core attitudes and values. He expects his disciples to have these same qualities, which lay out the way to follow him. Zephaniah (First Reading) urges people to be humble and do what is right; to be people of integrity and humility. The Lord will protect those living honest and just lives. The Psalmist celebrates the Lord’s faithfulness and concern for the poor and oppressed. God acts by giving food, freedom, sight, and hope, bringing justice, and lifting those bowed down.
The Second Reading reminds us that God’s ways are different from human ways. God often works through those who seem unimportant, for human strength and status do not matter to God. Real wisdom comes from following Christ. St Paul reminds us to ‘boast in the Lord’, not ourselves.
This week we pray for a greater trust in God, knowing that true happiness comes from following Jesus’ ways. We continue to think of those impacted by conflict, poverty and hunger throughout the world.

A Community Rosary in Sutton
Next Saturday,7th February, observing the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes (11th Feb.), the Holy Rosary will be prayed at St Fintan’s Church, Sutton, after the 6:30pm Vigil Mass and pray for the personal intentions and physical, emotional and mental health of all,
especially all students.
John Connors, actor and co-host of the ‘Reclaim the Faith’ podcast, will speak at Mass, pray the Rosary, and join in the community event afterwards, with refreshments and Irish music.

The Story of Brigid
St Brigid, whose feast day occurs today (1st February) was born at a time of major transition in 5th century Ireland. She embodies the pre-Christian Celtic and Christian Celtic spirit. It is generally accepted that she built her double monastery for men and women in Kildare around 470AD. Some scholars credit her with pioneering monastic life in Ireland. Her monastery was acclaimed as a centre of education, pilgrimage, worship and hospitality until the 16th century when all the monasteries were suppressed.
Irish missionaries and migrants carried her name and spirit across the world. Pilgrims and visitors come to Kildare from all over the world seeking to walk in Brigid’s footsteps.
Brigid is remembered through the ages as a woman of the land. Her feast day marks the first day of Spring. It is the season when we celebrate new life on earth. In a new hymn, she is invoked ”to heal our wounds and green our Earth again”. Many people today draw inspiration from the respect which Brigid and our ancestors had for all creation.
She had an extraordinary concern and compassion for the poor people of her time. Her legends challenge us to share the goods of the earth with our brothers and sisters especially those who live in desperate poverty in the developing world. Brigid’s spirit of hospitality is legendary. For Brigid, every guest is Christ.
Feuds between clans were commonplace in Brigid’s day. She is often referred to as a peacemaker who intervened in disputes and brought healing and reconciliation. She is depicted in an icon in the parish church in Kildare with her foot on the sword. She challenges us to be peacemakers and peacekeepers and challenges men and women today to create a church and society where both are equally respected.
Brigid spread the values of Christ. Her life continues to sing the song of the Gospel. She continues to be remembered as an extraordinary woman of faith and has an important place in the hearts of the people of Ireland and far beyond.
