The Building Hope Prayer
Pilgrim God, we give you thanks and praise. You constantly journey with us even in our darkness and doubts. We seek your way of loving kindness to walk together as one family.
Open our eyes to recognise you in the faces of one another,
in the breaking of bread and in the splendour of creation. May the risen Christ sow seeds of hope and new life deep within us. May our hearts and minds be filled with your Word, bringing forth truth, justice and peace. May the Holy Spirit working in and through us do much more than we can dare to imagine as we live out our baptismal calling in humble and loving service. We make this our prayer through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Reflection on Sunday’s Readings
‘I know them and they follow me.’
On this ‘Good Shepherd Sunday’, Jesus speaks of himself as the Good Shepherd, who brings life, love and protection to those within his flock. In the First Reading we follow Paul and Barnabas to Antioch, where their message is rejected by the Jewish leaders. Undeterred, they turn their preaching to those termed pagans. To the joy of the disciples, these people readily hear and receive the message of eternal life offered by the Lord, fulfilling the commission given by Jesus himself. Jesus, the shepherd himself, speaks in the Gospel, reminding us of the blessings of care and protection his sheep are promised — both now, and in eternal life, with Jesus and the Father. This week we can pray especially for those who, for whatever reason, may feel lost and without the protection of the shepherd they once knew. We also remember those who are searching for a flock in which to make their home. We continue to pray for peace across the world, for the people of Ukraine and eastern Europe.
Prayer for Ukraine
Holy and Gracious God. We pray for the people of Ukraine and the people of Russia, for their countries and their leaders. We pray for all those who are afraid; that your everlasting arms hold them in this time of great fear.
We pray for all those who have the power over life and death; that they will choose for all people life, and life in all its fullness. We pray for those who choose war; that they will remember that you direct your people to turn our swords into ploughshares and seek for peace. We pray for leaders on the world stage; that they are inspired by the wisdom and courage of Christ. Above all, Lord, today we pray for peace for Ukraine. And we ask this in the name of your blessed Son. Lord have mercy. Amen.

Pope Francis on Vocations Sunday 2022
The Pope said that when we speak of “vocation,” then, it is not just about choosing this or that way of life, or devoting one’s life to a certain ministry, or being attracted by the charism of a religious family, movement, or ecclesial community. Instead, “It is about making God’s dream come true, the great vision of fraternity that Jesus cherished when He prayed to the Father ‘that they may all be one’.”

Lay Ministry Diocesan Collection Next Weekend
The Lay Ministry Collection next weekend will support the development of a variety of lay ministries, providing for more women and men to work alongside the priests and deacons. The hope is that lay ministry will make a significant contribution to pastoral life into the future.

Mental Health Awareness Week: Loneliness
The annual European Mental Health Awareness Week runs from 9th to 15th May and the theme is ‘loneliness’. Two superb spiritual resources are on the website: The Jesuits devised seven mental health audio exercises, each lasting eight minutes, to encourage, in God’s presence, prayerful awareness of any feelings of unease or distress and address addiction, ageing, anxiety, depression, grief, insomnia and loneliness. It is hoped that they will be helpful for anyone who might be struggling at the moment. Also, the Church of England offers 13 audio reflections based on scripture, each about five minutes long – living in isolation, loneliness, God’s presence in our struggles, how we are feeling, spending time well, switching focus, listening to our thoughts, the divided self, forgiveness and love. A Wise Woman’s Stone
A wise woman, who was traveling in the mountains, found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveller who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveller saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveller left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime.
But, a few days later, he came back to return the stone to the wise woman. “I’ve been thinking,” he said. “I know how valuable this stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me this stone.”

The tree stands so patiently,
