The Irish Cancer Society
Is seeking compassionate volunteer drivers in our community to help to continue the vital service of transport for patients to cancer treatment appointments. If you have a few hours to spare, a valid driving license, and a safe, reliable vehicle, you can ease the journey during a challenging time, offering comfort and support when it is needed most. Details from Monica volunteer@irishcancer.ie.
Reflection on the Scriptures for this Sunday
‘I am the living bread which has come down from heaven.’
This Sunday’s readings show God’s loving kindness and care for us, calling us to live with love.
The Psalmist invites us to ’Taste and see that the Lord is good’. We, too, can sing our praises to the Lord, who always hears when we call out to Him and frees us from our fears.
In the First Reading, God hears Elijah as he cries out, despondent and wanting to give up. God reaches out to him through an angel, who offers food and water and encourages him to eat. This sustains Elijah, giving him the strength to continue his journey.
Similarly, Jesus desires to sustain us in our journey. In the Gospel, he reveals himself to the complaining Jews – and to us – as the ‘bread of life’. To those who are willing to be drawn to him, Jesus desires to be our comfort, our nourishment, our joy and our strength. He feeds us through our faith and our trust in him. The bread that he offers, his own body and way of life, gives life forever.
St Paul (Second Reading) reminds us that we are beloved children of God and urges us to follow Christ’s example of being kind and compassionate, readily showing forgiveness to one another.
Let’s pray always to be open to God’s tender care, and to savour the goodness he gives in our lives.
New Pilgrim Path
‘To Make His Name Known’ cf. John 17:26
“Do not try and cultivate a practice; simply be present with an open and loving heart”.
The great American mystic and Trappist monk, Thomas Merton, taught the novices at the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky. Beginning in April 1962, his lectures to the novices were recorded, allowing us to hear Merton speaking in his own voice. Never Give UP
Like a lotus flower, we, too, have the ability to rise from the mud. Bloom out of the darkness and radiate into the world. Genuine efforts always reap results, never give up, keep on trying till you achieve your dreams.
Walk Beside Them When It Gets Dark
There is something profoundly beautiful about someone who walks beside us when things grow dark. who already knows that the best thing they can do is honour the pain of our journey. who doesn’t come with a long list of suggestions but rather, has learnt the tender art of listening well, of loving deeply. of sharing the burden. of respecting silence, or tears, or awkward emotion. Being uncomfortable with someone else’s pain or grief is okay. there is no easy way through it. but your discomfort is the very least you can endure for the sake of being gracefully present in the clumsiness of someone else’s wildest storm. – Ullie Kaye
I Want to Feel It All
“Are you happy?” “In all honesty? No. But I am curious – I am curious in my sadness, and I am curious in my joy. I am ever-seeking, ever-feeling. I am in awe of the beautiful moments life gives us, and I am in awe of the difficult ones. I am transfixed by grief, by growth. It is all so stunning, so rich, and I will never convince myself that I cannot be sombre, cannot be hurt, cannot be overjoyed.
I want to feel it all – I don’t want to cover it up or numb it. So no, I am not happy. I am open, and 1 wouldn’t have it any other way.” – Bianca Sparacino
It Doesn’t Get Easier
It doesn’t get easier with time, as some may often claim; a day, a month, a year, the pain still feels the same. We try to forge onwards, as we now have to do, trying to live without you, is what we must do.
Everything keeps moving, life doesn’t stand still, but without you here, our lives are changed, forever more.
We do our best to enjoy moments, scattered here and there, grasping little pockets of joy, whenever they appear.
Our hearts will never be repaired, nor would we want them to be, a part of our hearts left with you, the day you disappeared.
That’s how it felt on that awful day, one moment you were here with us, the next gone forever more.
Life can change so quickly, without reason or rhyme, our lives forever altered, in the blink of an eye.
Though no longer here, we feel you near still, in our hearts you will always be with us, a part of our lives still. Mary Anne Byrne ~ Spirit of a Hippie
Thought For The WeekIf you don’t leave your past in the past, it will destroy your future. Live for what today has to offer, not what yesterday has taken away. |
