Safeguarding/Vetting
A Message from the Garda Vetting Office –
Post-Covid, many parishes are re-introducing ministries such as Altar Servers, Family Masses and other children’s liturgies. This is to be welcomed and encouraged.
Parishes are reminded that proper safeguarding measures need to be in place prior to ministries/activities involving children and young people recommencing. Please note the following:
- No activity involving children/young people should be embarked upon without the involvement of the Parish Safeguarding Representative prior to the start of such activity whose responsibility it is to ensure that all safeguarding measure are in place.
- All persons working directly with children/young people in the parish (where parents/guardians are not present), must complete Garda Vetting and relevant diocesan safeguarding training prior to taking up their role. This is a legal requirement under the National Vetting Bureau Act 2012/2016 and a requirement under the NBSCCCI.
Updating Your Garda Vetting
Some parishioners involved in various Parish Teams may get an email request to update their Garda Vetting. Forms are available in the Parish Office. Please contact Janice if you need assistance as she can provide you with the form and will scan your completed form along with your two forms of Identification to the Safety Vetting Officer in Archbishop’s House. Identification accepted are as follows: Utility Bill or Statement (must contain your current address) AND
Photographic ID e.g. a copy of your Passport or Drivers licence. PPS cards are no longer accepted.

Reflection on the Scriptures for this Sunday
He came to bring the good news of peace
The shepherding care of God is a central theme of today’s readings. This divine shepherding brings reconciliation and ends false separation.
Jeremiah (First Reading) shows great courage as he castigates the rulers of his day, describing them as corrupt, irresponsible shepherds. But he also foresees that God will raise up other shepherds with integrity, who will be true leaders of their people.
This prophesy is fulfilled in the Gospel, where Jesus sees the people as ‘sheep without a shepherd’. His loving concern for them reveals him as the Good Shepherd, who offers food for hearts and souls and bodies. He tends the tired apostles, inviting them to rest awhile, affirming a balanced life that includes times of reflection and rest as well as activity.
Today’s Psalm is the famous song of confidence and trust in the Lord as ‘my shepherd’: the God who is with his people in times of challenge, rest and celebration.
St Paul (Second Reading) offers us the basis for a profound understanding of human interconnectedness and unity as children of the one creator. Christ Jesus brings all peoples together: he is the great unifier and peacemaker.
This week, we pray for peace for innocent victims of war in the world and ask for individual and collective courage and humility that leads to forgiveness and reconciliation. Let us follow Jesus’ invitation when we can: ‘Come … rest for a while in my presence …’.

New Pilgrim Path – Richard Rohr on “Becoming Stillness”
“God refuses to be known by the intellect. God only allows himself to be loved by the heart.” Franciscan author, Richard Rohr, quotes St John of the Cross in a powerful hour-long address on ‘Becoming Stillness’. He expresses the conviction that our day-to-day life and our religious beliefs do not allow us to understand, embrace or even recognize the great mystery of God’s love and compassion because we are locked in the grids of our own conditioned minds. The Parish Office has a variety of items found in the Church – many rosary beads, house and car keys (one with a lovely silver attachment, reading glasses, etc.
Pope Francis this Week
Pope Francis reflecting on last Sunday’s gospel said – to be free, he said, we need to go without the superfluous, in such a way that everyone has what they need to live with dignity and to contribute actively to the mission.
When we are content with what is necessary, even with little, with God’s help, we manage to get along and agree, sharing what we have, everyone giving up something and supporting each other.”
We aren’t loved because we are good – we become good because we experience love. The more love we experience the better it is for us, our family, our community and the world we live in. We sometimes stumble and sometimes fall. Does this mean that we should abandon the road of love that guides us each day? God loves the sinner but hates the sin. There is a big difference between the two. So today begin to believe in you, to believe in God’s love for you and to believe that now is the time to start again, even after a stumble or fall in your life.
